About this position
PhD studentship at Aston University in Birmingham, United Kingdom, focused on how radiotherapy affects brain structure and function in children with brain tumours, and how these changes relate to cognition.
The project combines longitudinal MRI data from the Imaging of Tumours (IOT) study with new data collected using Optically Pumped Magnetometer Magnetoencephalography (OPM-MEG). The research will compare children who received radiotherapy with those who did not, with the aim of identifying treatment-related changes in brain networks, structure, connectivity, and developmental patterns.
This is a clinically oriented, interdisciplinary opportunity in neuroscience, neuroimaging, cognitive assessment, data science, and advanced statistical analysis. The student will work with Aston University’s Institute for Health and Neurodevelopment and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, gaining experience with paediatric neuroimaging, clinical populations, MRI, MEG, and cognitive testing.
Funding is fully funded for home fees plus an annual stipend. International applicants may apply, but they must cover the difference between Home and Overseas tuition fees each year.
Entry requirements include a relevant bachelor's degree at First Class or 2.1, or a relevant bachelor's degree at First Class or 2.1 plus a relevant master's degree with Merit or higher. Helpful experience includes programming, scripting, working with children, brain imaging, and clinical data.
Apply by 15 September for a January 2027 start. Applications are submitted through Aston University’s PhD application form. Formal enquiries can be sent to Dr Jan Novak at [email protected].
