About this position
PhD opportunity in tip vortex and turbine wake control at King’s College London. This fully funded studentship is part of the ERC Starting Grant project MISSMAPS – MIcroScale Solutions for MAcroscale problems: flow control through Permeable Structures, led by Dr Yabin Liu.
The project focuses on fluid dynamics, vortex dynamics, turbine wakes, wind energy, tidal energy, and flow control. Research topics include coherent vortical structures from wind and tidal turbine rotors, wake recovery, passive flow-control strategies, novel permeable blade-tip concepts, vortex formation and breakdown, wake mixing, and interactions between multiple turbines. The work combines advanced computational fluid dynamics (LES and/or hybrid RANS-LES) with experimental validation, and may also suit candidates interested in fluid-structure interaction, multiphysics design, or AI-driven optimisation.
The PhD is based at King’s College London and is co-supervised by researchers at the University of Oxford and TU Delft. The wider project offers access to expertise in turbine aero-hydrodynamics, wake modelling, experimental fluid mechanics, and aeroacoustics, plus opportunities for collaborative visits, specialist training, and international conferences.
Funding: full tuition fees, doctoral stipend (£25,764 p.a.), bench fees (£3,000 p.a.), and research support for computational and experimental work, laptop, training, travel, and conference participation. Funding is available for 3.5 years.
Eligibility: currently for Home students for Feb-27 entry; EU students who qualify for home status may also apply. If no suitable candidates are identified, international students may be considered for the June-27 entry point, but they should not submit a formal application yet. Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first-class or strong upper-second-class degree in Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related field. A relevant Master’s degree is desirable but not essential.

What's required
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a first-class or strong upper-second-class degree (or international equivalent) in Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline. A relevant Master’s degree is desirable but not essential. Strong interest in fluid dynamics, vortex dynamics, renewable energy, and computational and/or experimental research is required. Advantageous experience includes CFD with OpenFOAM or Nektar++, hybrid RANS-LES or LES methods, experimental fluid mechanics, turbulence, aerodynamics or hydrodynamics, fluid-structure interaction, multiphysics modelling, optimisation, machine learning/AI, or wind/tidal energy. Applicants should show strong initiative, self-motivation, enthusiasm for research, excellent analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international team.
