About this position
Postdoctoral Research Associate at The University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom.
This full-time, fixed-term (36 months) postdoctoral opportunity focuses on viscoelastic fluid flows, including elastic turbulence (ET) and elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT) in polymer solutions. The project combines experiments, simulations, statistical analysis, and machine learning to improve quantitative agreement between experimental observations and theoretical models.
The research program includes three aims: (1) improving agreement between 2D experiments and simulations, including flow structures and statistics, and using ML to optimize simulation parameters and estimate polymer stresses from experimental data; (2) studying the uniqueness of the elastic turbulence state in flows with streamline curvature and in parallel shear flows, in both 2D and 3D; and (3) relaxing the low-inertia condition to explore the relationship between ET and EIT in 2D flows.
The post holder will work closely with collaborators at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Cambridge (DAMTP), and the University of Vermont, with opportunities for travel. The role is suitable for candidates interested in fluid dynamics, turbulence, polymer physics, viscoelastic modeling, and data-driven methods.
Deadline: 17 September 2026.
