About this position

College of Business and Law at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD studentship on Water Governance, Legal Frameworks and Regional Outcomes.

This interdisciplinary project sits at the intersection of law, economics, political science, environmental science, and business/management. It examines how legal and regulatory design shapes water-system outcomes across the UK’s jurisdictions, with particular attention to ownership structures, regulation, governance philosophy, environmental performance, investment, climate adaptation, and the distribution of costs and benefits across regions and communities.

The project is especially relevant to applicants interested in water governance, environmental law, public policy, regulatory reform, sustainability, and regional outcomes. The call highlights comparative analysis of England, Wales, and Scotland, including the implications of the proposed English regulatory overhaul and the role of statutory frameworks such as the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015.

Funding: the studentship runs for 3 years from 1 October 2026 and includes a tax-exempt stipend of £21,805 per annum plus full-time home/international fees.

Eligibility: applicants should have at least a 2.1 degree in environmental management, economics, sustainability studies, environmental law, or a related discipline such as politics, human geography, sociology, or anthropology. A Masters degree is preferred. An English language qualification is required; IELTS 7.0 overall or equivalent is stated.

How to apply: prepare a research proposal of no more than 5 pages, discuss it with the potential supervisor, and submit the online application using reference number 2627-OCT-CBL01. Upload your proposal, degree certificates, transcripts, and proof of English language proficiency, and provide two referees.

Deadline: the closing date is 16 August 2026, 6pm UK time.
