About this position
The University of Luxembourg is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Sustainability Science within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE), based at the Kirchberg Campus in Luxembourg. The position sits in the Department of Social Sciences and the Sustainability Science and Transformation research group, an interdisciplinary environment focused on participatory, transdisciplinary, and transformative research on contemporary social and ecological challenges.
This postdoctoral role contributes to the ScotLuxSplash project, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) in collaboration with partners in Scotland. The project examines how citizen scientists, environmental organisations, public authorities, and policymakers can work together more effectively in catchment governance and environmental decision-making across Scotland and Luxembourg. The Luxembourg-based researcher will help develop and implement participatory research activities, support collaboration with the Scottish team, and co-design a process for participatory actionable knowledge co-production.
Core tasks include research design, project management, reporting, data management and archiving, and collaborative teamwork across the consortium. The researcher will organise and facilitate stakeholder workshops and other participatory processes, build relationships with project partners and stakeholders, and contribute to the further development of a digital knowledge platform supporting environmental governance and citizen science. The role also involves qualitative and mixed-method data collection, analysis, and the production of academic, policy, and public-facing outputs, including co-developing submissions to peer-reviewed journals.
The project themes include sustainability transitions, environmental governance in social-ecological systems, human-nature relations, biodiversity, social learning, climate resilience, science-policy relations, and citizen science. The position is especially suited to applicants with experience in qualitative or mixed methods, participatory workshops, stakeholder engagement, transdisciplinary or participatory action research, and an interest in governance, water/catchment management, and sustainability transformations.
Required qualifications include a PhD in geography, sustainability science, environmental governance, science and technology studies, environmental social sciences, or a closely related interdisciplinary field with a strong social science component. Applicants should have a demonstrable ability to publish or strong publication potential, strong organisational and project management skills, and excellent English plus very good German or French. Additional language skills such as Luxembourgish are desirable. The post is a fixed-term contract for 41 months and is full time (40 hours per week).
To apply, candidates should submit a CV, cover letter, PhD diploma or proof of expected defence date, and degree certificates/transcripts. Applications must be submitted online via the HR system; email applications will not be considered. Early application is encouraged, as applications are reviewed upon receipt.
