University of Gothenburg is advertising a fully funded PhD position in Peace and Development Research in Sweden, focused on Transnational Repression (TNR), human rights, and global governance.

This is a paid doctoral employment rather than a scholarship. The successful candidate will join the School of Global Studies and contribute to an international research project examining how democratic host states respond to authoritarian repression across borders. The project is especially relevant to students interested in peace and conflict studies, international relations, migration, human rights protection, global governance, and political science.

The research environment is interdisciplinary and internationally connected. The doctoral student will work on themes such as state responses to transnational repression, reporting systems, institutional responses, collaboration with civil society, protection mechanisms for diaspora communities, and legal or policy responses across countries such as Sweden, Norway, and Estonia.

The PhD programme lasts four years full-time and may include up to 20% teaching or departmental duties, which can extend the employment period. The position includes a monthly salary, supervision, mentorship, teaching experience, and access to international research networks.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent second-cycle qualification, or at least 240 higher education credits including 60 credits at Master’s level. Relevant academic backgrounds include International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Global Development Studies, or a closely related field. Strong English skills are required, and additional language skills relevant to the case-study countries are an advantage.
