About this position

Fully-funded PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge / Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute in innate-adaptive immune interactions in cancer evolution.

The project is supervised by Dr Tim Halim and focuses on how tissue-resident immune cells, especially group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2), coordinate with other immune and non-immune cells during early tumour development and cancer evolution. The work spans multiple cancer types, including pancreatic, breast, ovarian, and lung, and aims to uncover mechanisms that could be targeted therapeutically to slow or halt tumour progression.

Students will use a mix of immunology, cell biology, cancer biology, and computational biology methods. Techniques mentioned include high-parameter flow cytometry, multiplex imaging, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, intravital imaging, proximity labelling, in vitro assays, in vivo models, and analysis of patient-derived material. Training in in silico analysis is provided.

Preferred background includes experience in flow cytometry/FACS, microscopy, cell culture, tumour assays, tissue processing, molecular biology, transcriptomic analysis, and murine or human tissue work. Interest in bioinformatics and computational biology is also valued.

What's required

Preferred experience includes flow cytometry/FACS, immunofluorescence microscopy, cell culture, tumour cell killing assays, tissue processing, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, virus production, ELISA, bulk/single-cell/spatial transcriptomic analysis, spatial biology tools such as HALO or Imaris, and murine or human tissue work. Interest in bioinformatics and computational biology is desirable; training will be provided.
