About this position

Fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Surrey in the Surrey Morphology Group, School of Literature and Languages, on predictability in Romance verbal inflection.

The project is part of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project Scaling predictability in Morphological paradigms and focuses on how speakers infer and predict inflected word forms across Romance languages. The research combines linguistics, morphology, Romance linguistics, and computational methodology, with an emphasis on synchronic and diachronic analysis.

The successful PhD candidate will work with Dr Sacha Beniamine, Dr Oliver Bond, and Dr Matteo Pellegrini, and will join a strong research environment in morphological theory, typology, and description. The project offers opportunities to collaborate on methodology, data, and comparative questions across language families.

Funding: 3.5 years (42 months) of funding, UK or international fees covered, UKRI standard stipend (£21,805 for 2026-27), and support for conference travel.

Eligibility: Open to UK and international candidates. Applicants should have excellent undergraduate performance, expertise in morphological description and analysis, familiarity with Romance linguistics, and the ability to meet the English language requirements for the PhD programme. Prior computational expertise is not required, but willingness to learn technical methods is expected.

How to apply: Submit an application via the Linguistics PhD programme page. Also email a CV and one-page statement of interest to Alison Stubley at [email protected], naming the project and supervisors.

Deadline: 2026-12-20. Starting date is April 2027, with later start dates possible by contacting Dr Sacha Beniamine after the deadline.
