About this position

University of Greenwich Business School is advertising a funded PhD on Artificial Intelligence in retail returns, with a focus on generative AI fraud risks, agentic detection, and responsible human–AI governance. The project sits at the intersection of business, management, marketing, data science, machine learning, cyber security, and human-computer interaction.

The research examines how GenAI is changing retail return behaviour by enabling fabricated receipts, altered product images, and synthetic evidence in refund claims. It also explores how agentic AI can be used on the retailer side to monitor claims, detect anomalies, triage cases, and support human oversight without undermining customer trust.

The project aims to develop a responsible AI framework for retail product return management. The proposed methodology is a sequential mixed-methods design combining behavioural experiments with machine-learning and explainable AI analysis of retail/e-commerce big data.

Funding: Year 1 bursary of £23,805 (UKRI 2026-27 standard rate plus London Weighting), with Years 2 and 3 funded at the relevant UKRI rate. Tuition support covers the university's Home rate; international applicants must pay the remaining tuition fee.

Eligibility highlights: The post is open to students worldwide. The advert seeks candidates who are curious, motivated, analytically minded, and interested in AI, retail operations, consumer behaviour, fraud prevention, and responsible governance.

Location: London, United Kingdom.

Application: Register interest via the FindAPhD page and contact the lead supervisor, Dr. James Duong, for an informal discussion if needed.
