About this position

Funded PhD opportunity at Coventry University in the Centre for Discoveries in Life Sciences, delivered through the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP).

This project focuses on bioleaching, tantalum recovery, superalloy waste, critical minerals, and environmental biotechnology. The research will investigate microbial mechanisms for mobilising tantalum from superalloy-processing wastes and selectively removing contaminating metals such as calcium and tungsten. It combines microbiology, microbial metabolism, metal speciation, and process optimisation to develop a novel circular-economy route for sustainable resource recovery.

The project is interdisciplinary and is delivered in collaboration with Advanced Alloys Services, linking fundamental bioscience with industrial metal recycling. Students will explore microbial growth, metabolite production, adaptation to metal-rich environments, and how process variables such as pH, temperature, nutrient availability, solid loading, and microbial community affect selective metal removal and tantalum enrichment.

Funding includes full tuition fees at the UK rate, a tax-free annual stipend (currently £21,805 in academic year 2026-27), a travel/conference budget, a consumables budget, and use of a MacBook Pro. Coventry University also funds the difference between UK and international tuition fee rates.

Eligibility: applicants should hold at least a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline, with 60% minimum in the project element or equivalent and 60% overall module average. International applicants must meet English language requirements, with IELTS Academic 7.0 overall (6.5 in each section) or TOEFL iBT 95 overall (21 in each section).

How to apply: check eligibility, complete the ED&I form and the application form, and review the MIBTP Data Privacy Policy. Administrative queries can be sent to [email protected].

Application context: this is a funded PhD project for students worldwide, based in Coventry, United Kingdom.
