About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of St Andrews in the School of Biology / School of Chemistry, working on design, synthesis, and mechanism of action of inhibitors of the human enzyme DNPH1 (2′-deoxynucleoside 5′-phosphate N-hydrolase 1).
This project sits at the interface of Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Synthesis, and Chemical Biology. DNPH1 is a nucleotide-sanitizing enzyme, and the project aims to design potent and selective inhibitors and elucidate how they work mechanistically. The student will gain experience in structure- and mechanism-based inhibitor design, synthesis of small molecules, spectroscopic characterisation, enzyme kinetics, and analysis of inhibition mechanisms.
The project is hosted in the Biomedical Sciences Research Complex (BSRC), a collaborative research environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure for structural biology, enzymology, molecular biophysics, NMR, HPLC, MS, crystallisation, and access to major facilities such as Diamond Light Source and ESRF.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a 1st-class degree in Chemistry with a focus on Medicinal Chemistry. Practical experience in organic synthesis and chemical biology is preferred. The opportunity is open to UK and international students.
Funding: this is a 4-year competition-funded PhD through the EASTBIO BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership. Funding covers a stipend at the UKRI standard rate and UK tuition fees; the University of St Andrews covers the Home-International fee difference.
How to apply: complete the EASTBIO Equality, Diversity and Inclusion survey and the EASTBIO Application Form, then submit an online application via the University of St Andrews portal. Select PhD with internship and upload the required documents, including qualifications, English language evidence if applicable, and two references.
Application contact: queries on the project can be directed to the supervisors; application questions can be sent to Rachel Horn at [email protected].
