About this position

Funded PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in flat optical fibre sensing for transformer winding vibration monitoring.

This project develops a novel flat optical-fibre sensor for precise, continuous monitoring of transformer winding vibration in high-voltage environments. The research combines optical sensing, electrical engineering, structural dynamics, mechatronics, and multiphysics modelling to create an EMI-immune sensing platform that can detect early mechanical degradation in transformer windings.

You will work on fibre-geometry optimisation, sensor design, vibration testing, packaging and attachment strategies, and interrogation methods suitable for real transformer deployment. The project also includes analysis of sensitivity, bandwidth, noise performance, dynamic range, long-term stability, and the translation of winding vibration into optical response. Training is provided in fibre fabrication, optical interrogation systems, vibration-testing platforms, COMSOL/ANSYS modelling, signal processing, and experimental calibration.

The project is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, with opportunities to collaborate with transformer manufacturers and energy-sector partners. It builds on EPSRC-funded research and an Impact Acceleration Account award supporting commercial translation of the flat-fibre technology.

Funding: tuition fees are covered and a tax-free living stipend is provided.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in engineering or physics. English language qualification is required if applicable.

How to apply: submit an application for the Research programme for 2027/28, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Choose full-time or part-time, search for PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175), and add the supervisor name in section 2. Include a CV, two academic references, degree transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if needed.

Deadline: 2027-03-19.
