About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in Robotic Ultrasonic Drilling for Real-Time, Minimally Invasive Subsurface Damage Characterisation in Degraded Concrete.

This project sits at the intersection of robotics, ultrasonic drilling/machining, smart sensing, real-time control, civil engineering, and materials characterisation. The research aims to develop a robotic ultrasonic drilling platform for minimally invasive, high-resolution assessment of subsurface damage in degraded concrete, especially in hazardous or inaccessible environments such as marine structures, fire-damaged infrastructure, radiation-exposed sites, freeze-thaw environments, submerged structures, confined spaces, and post-disaster zones.

You will work on the design of a small ultrasonic drill with embedded force, temperature, and acoustic sensors, together with a mobile robotic platform for deployment in complex environments. The project also includes robotic manipulation, positioning accuracy, tool–structure interaction, adaptive control, advanced signal processing, data interpretation, and multi-physics modelling. Experimental validation will be carried out using state-of-the-art characterisation techniques.

The supervisory team includes Dr Xuan Li (Mechanical Engineering) and Dr Ye Li, with interdisciplinary collaboration across Mechanical and Civil Engineering. The project offers access to world-class laboratories and cutting-edge facilities for materials testing, embedded systems, and robotics.

Eligibility: UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, mechanics, mechatronics, or a related field. Strong motivation, self-direction, proactive research attitude, and good communication/teamwork skills are expected. IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required if applicable.

Funding: competition-based funding is available, including Presidential Bursaries and school studentships that may cover UK-level tuition fees and a living-cost stipend. Horizon Europe fee waivers may cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students. Self-funded applicants are also welcome.
