This PhD project investigates how GLP-1/GIP dual agonists such as tirzepatide affect the gastrointestinal tract, with a focus on gut permeability, mucosal microbial communities, region-specific microbial signatures, and pathways linked to barrier and immune function. The project is based in the Gut Homeostasis in Cardiometabolic Health Laboratory within the Nutrition & Health Innovation Research Institute at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia. The lab studies how the gut environment, including intestinal permeability, luminal pH, and microbial activity, contributes to cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic disease, and how these processes may be modified through diet and therapy.

Ideal candidates will have a background or strong interest in biomedical science, microbiology, nutrition, gastroenterology, immunology, or related fields. Experience with preclinical and/or clinical research and molecular biology techniques is preferred. The project includes both wet-lab and bioinformatics components, so comfort with laboratory-based methods is important; experience with microbial bioinformatics, data science, or R programming is desirable.
