About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Technology Sydney in pulmonary fibrosis, respiratory medicine, molecular biology, immunology, and single-cell transcriptomics.
This project, supervised by Dr Gang Liu in the Faculty of Science, focuses on understanding how tissue repair becomes dysregulated in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and how this drives progressive lung scarring, tissue stiffening, and respiratory failure. The research aims to: (1) define how structural and immune cell interactions regulate lung fibrosis; (2) identify molecular drivers of extracellular matrix deposition and tissue stiffening; and (3) explore therapeutic strategies to restore normal tissue repair and halt fibrotic progression.
The project uses advanced methods including cell and molecular biology, single-cell transcriptomics, 3D lung tissue models, in vivo fibrosis models, and computational analysis. It is designed for a motivated student interested in translational research, with opportunities to collaborate with clinicians, international partners, and industry.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a First Class Honours degree or a Master’s degree with a research component in biomedical science, molecular biology, immunology, physiology, lung disease research, or a related field. Laboratory research experience and practical skills in cell culture and molecular biology are required. Strong communication skills, independence, teamwork, and commitment to full-time PhD study are expected. Desirable experience includes immunostaining, flow cytometry, RNA sequencing, imaging, animal models, statistics, and data analysis.
Funding: competition funded PhD project with funding notes of 37k/year for 3.5 years.
Application window: the application is currently open and will remain open until all positions are filled. International students must study full time on campus in Australia and meet English test requirements.
