About this position

Funded PhD studentship at Leeds Beckett University (Carnegie School of Sport) in the UK, working with the England Blind Football Teams on biomechanics, head impacts, concussion, medical statistics, neurology, physiology, sport performance, and sport technology.

The project aims to describe the magnitude, frequency, and severity of head impacts in blind football, using validated instrumented mouthguards, video analysis, and clinical assessments of sports-related concussion. The research also includes advanced computational analysis with collaborators at Imperial College London, including finite element brain modelling to identify brain regions of interest during impacts.

Supervisory team: Prof. Ben Jones and Dr James Tooby at Leeds Beckett University, with wider collaborators from the Football Association, Imperial College London, and other sport science experts. The studentship is part of a wider applied research effort to improve player welfare and injury management in blind football, including preparation for the Los Angeles Paralympics.

Funding: Home (UK) fees and stipend, with a stipend value of £21,805. Research support funding and access to world-class facilities are included. International candidates may apply but must pay the international fee top-up.

Start date: 1 October 2026. Mode of study: Full-time, 3 years. One opportunity is available. Interviews are planned for 14–18 September 2026.
