About this position
Washington State University is recruiting two funded PhD students for a newly funded NSF project, Collaborative Argumentation with AI Agents: Understanding Human-AI Interactions (CA-AI). The project examines how university students and generative AI agents reason, interact, and construct scientific knowledge together.
The PhD opportunity is in Mathematics and Science Education and is especially relevant to students interested in human–AI interaction, AI agents, generative AI, science learning, scientific reasoning, and learning-centered AI systems.
Two focus areas are available:
• Science Education & Biology — suited to candidates with a strong science background, especially biology, and interests in science learning, argumentation, and qualitative/quantitative research.
• AI in Education & AI Agents — suited to candidates interested in LLMs, AI agents, AI for STEM education, Python, machine learning, learning analytics, and AI system development.
The positions include assistantship salary/stipend, tuition waiver, and graduate student health insurance, subject to satisfactory progress, eligibility, and continued project funding.
