About this position

Funded PhD opportunity at the University of Warwick (WMG), within the Advanced Elastomer Research Group at the International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing (IINM). The project is titled From Nanointerfaces to Dynamic Performance: Next Generation Elastomer Technologies and is supervised by Prof. Chaoying Wan and Prof. S P Brown.

This PhD focuses on polymer science, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, and nanocomposites. The research will investigate surface chemistry and nanocomposites technology to understand the dynamic performance of advanced elastomer nanocomposites, including structure–property relationships, viscoelasticity, energy efficiency, durability, reinforcement, and thermal conductivity. Carbon and hybrid nanomaterials will be explored to improve performance and sustainability.

The project also addresses environmental challenges such as tyre-wear particle emissions and Euro 7 requirements, while exploring lower embodied carbon, extended service life, self-healing, adaptiveness, and reprocessability. Training includes advanced rheology analysis, solid-state NMR, and time-resolved structure characterisation.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have or expect to hold a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc / MChem / BSc in chemistry, polymer science, or chemical engineering, with experience in chemical synthesis, analytical chemistry, and structure characterisation. Candidates with experience in polymers, elastomers, nanomaterials, surface chemistry, or advanced characterisation are especially encouraged to apply.

Funding: the project is funded for 3.5 years by a global tyre industry partner.

What's required

Applicants should have or expect to hold a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc, MChem or BSc in chemistry, polymer science or chemical engineering. Background or experience in chemical synthesis, analytical chemistry, structure characterisation, polymers, elastomers, nanomaterials, surface chemistry or advanced characterisation is preferred. Strong time-management, organisation, teamwork, deadline reliability, academic writing, communication and presentation skills are desirable.
