About this position
PhD opportunity in Sustainable Supramolecular Structured Liquids at the University of York
This funded PhD project explores supramolecular chemistry, structured liquids, polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, and synthetic chemistry to develop sustainable alternatives to oil-derived viscosification agents used in consumer and personal care products. The project aims to design low-molecular-weight building blocks that self-assemble into liquid modifiers with tunable performance and improved environmental breakdown profiles.
The project is advertised by the University of York within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Chemical Synthesis for a Healthy Planet (CSHP CDT), a joint training programme with Oxford and York. The substantive research project will be based primarily at York, in the Department of Chemistry / Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence environment, with training across both universities.
Funding is fully provided for four years and includes 100% home fees, a tax-free annual living allowance of £21,805 (2026/27 UKRI rate), and a £20,000 research training support grant. Candidates of any nationality are welcome, although only a limited number of places are available for exceptional international students. Visa costs and the NHS surcharge are not covered.
Eligibility: applicants should have or expect to gain at least a 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject, usually chemistry or chemical engineering. Strong research motivation, independent thinking, analytical ability, and good written and verbal communication skills are required.
How to apply: submit an online PhD in Chemistry application. Prepare a 1000-word personal statement, list your 1-2-3 project preferences, provide transcripts, and arrange two academic/professional references. York applicants must also complete the CSHP CDT EDI data form. The first deadline is 13 November 2026 at 12 noon, and applications may continue after that date if places remain.
Supervisor: Prof David Smith (University of York).
