About this position

Funded PhD opportunity in public engagement with fungi, offered in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Anglia Ruskin University. The project explores how people notice, understand, and value garden fungi, and how to improve fungal literacy and engagement through creative and potentially more-than-human approaches.

The research is based at RHS Wisley, Surrey, UK, with travel to ARU Cambridge. You would work with expert mycologist Jassy Drakulic on the RHS Plant Health Team, and with ARU supervisors Philippa Calver and Lara Houston. The project sits within the CAM-DTP doctoral community, offering specialist training, methods development, and interdisciplinary networks.

This is a fully funded PhD studentship with a full UKRI stipend, Home tuition fees, and research/training support. It is open to UK home students only and requires a full thesis (not a PhD by practice).

Deadline: 15 November 2026. Start date: September 2027. An online drop-in information session with supervisors is scheduled for 26 October 2026, 1–2 pm.

Interested candidates should contact Lara Houston for the online drop-in link and a guide to applying, then review the full studentship details and application instructions.
