About this position

PhD opportunity at Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge, United Kingdom) in Zoo Spaces and Equitable Nature Connection.

This funded PhD project examines how UK zoo education programmes and zoo spaces can strengthen public connection to nature and support behaviour change. Working with the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), the student will use social science and mixed-methods approaches to audit conservation education interventions across multiple zoos. The project also links visitor outcomes with ESRC poverty databases to understand how socioeconomic deprivation shapes equitable access to nature-based learning.

Research themes include conservation education, nature connection, behaviour change, biodiversity, ecology, climate science, and social equity. The successful candidate will help shape the empirical focus by selecting target audiences and geographic regions, then co-designing and refining educational frameworks with BIAZA partners. The work is especially relevant for students interested in informal environmental pedagogy, spatial/demographic analysis, and third-sector collaboration.

Supervisory team: Professor Anna Nekaris, Dr Melanie Rohse, Dr Elsa Lee, and Dr Cerian Tatchley (BIAZA). The lead supervisor is based at Anglia Ruskin University, with the project anchored in the School of Life Sciences and related research centres.

Funding is provided through the Cambridge ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (CAM-DTP). The studentship supports 3.5–4.5 years of full-time study, with part-time study (minimum 50%) encouraged. It includes tuition fees up to the UKRI Home rate, an annual tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 in 2026–27 for full-time students), up to £900 for research training, a personalised training programme, and a required three-month placement.

Eligibility: applicants should have or expect a 2:1 bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience. A master’s degree in a relevant subject is desirable. Applicants from non-traditional backgrounds are encouraged, and both home and international students may apply. International students must secure additional funding for the fee difference and cover visa/immigration health surcharge costs.

Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Applicants must contact Professor Anna Nekaris before applying and then submit via the ARU online portal using the October 2027 entry option marked “CAM-DTP Only.”
