About this position
PhD opportunity: Quantifying drug response in cancer using 4D imaging with oblique plane microscopy (OPM) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS), London, United Kingdom.
This funded PhD project focuses on understanding heterogeneous drug response and resistance in cancer. The project combines biophysics, cancer biology, cell biology, optical physics, and data analysis to study how genetically identical cancer cells respond differently to drugs over time.
The student will work with 3D cancer spheroids expressing fluorescent reporters to track cell cycle or signalling state, optimise OPM hardware, and develop software pipelines for quantitative time-lapse imaging. The project also includes developing label-free OCT on the dOPM system to enable low-light-dose tracking between fluorescence acquisitions, and then using these tools to identify synergistic drug combinations, study mechanisms of synergy, and determine optimal drug scheduling.
Supervisors: Dr A Barr, Prof C Dunsby, and Dr Susana Ros.
Funding: Full tuition fees plus a tax-free stipend of £26,500 per year, paid monthly. Funding is available for both Home and Overseas students.
Eligibility: Suitable for students with a physics, relevant physical sciences, or relevant engineering background, and a strong interest in optical physics with motivation to apply it to cancer biology.
How to apply: Follow the application instructions on the LMS studentships page and submit the application form by the deadline. Registering interest on FindAPhD is not an application.
