About this position

Funded PhD opportunity in retrotransposable elements, glioblastoma, cancer biology, immunology, epigenetics, and genomics at The Francis Crick Institute and King's College London.

This 2027 Crick–King's College London Joint PhD project is supervised by Dr G Kassiotis (Francis Crick Institute) and Dr Sheila Singh (King's College London). The project investigates how retrotransposable elements (RTEs), including LINEs, SINEs, and endogenous retroviruses (HERVs), are reactivated in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and how they may influence tumour biology and immunogenicity.

Research themes include the landscape of RTE expression across GBM subtypes, links with epigenetic state and patient outcomes, the role of RTE-encoded proteins or cis-regulatory effects on oncogenesis and proliferation, and whether genetic or pharmacological manipulation of RTEs could alter disease profile or outcome. The project combines expertise in retroviral immunology, HERV biology, glioblastoma stem cell biology, and neuro-oncology.

The student will work across two complementary laboratories: Prof. Sheila Singh's group at King's College London, with patient-derived GSC lines and orthotopic xenograft models, and Prof. George Kassiotis's programme at the Francis Crick Institute, focused on HERV transcriptomics and the immunological consequences of endogenous retroviral reactivation.

Funding: non-taxable annual stipend of £27,715 plus university tuition fees. Students of all nationalities are eligible.

Ideal background: cancer biology, mouse models, genetics/genomics, and interest in transposable elements and immunology.

Location: London, United Kingdom.

Deadline: Monday, 2 November 2026.
