About this position

Funded PhD position in Neuroscience at the Institute of Neuroscience of Alicante (Department of Cellular and Systems Biology), Spain.

The project focuses on brain plasticity, especially activity-dependent myelination and the molecular/cellular mechanisms by which oligodendrocyte progenitors (OPCs) sense neuronal activity and remodel neural circuits. The work aims to understand how myelin plasticity supports adaptation, higher cognitive and emotional processing, and how these pathways may be harnessed for CNS remyelination and treatment of demyelinating diseases.

The PhD research will use state-of-the-art approaches including chemogenetics, optogenetics, genetic lineage tracing, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, and validation in human iPSC-derived oligodendrocytes. Candidates with experience in biochemistry, RNA/omics, cell biology, modern imaging, or behavior are especially encouraged to apply.

Eligibility highlights: an excellent academic record, a Master’s degree in Neuroscience or a related field (e.g. Biochemistry, Biomedicine), and good English are required. Experience in cell biology, bioinformatics, or cell culture is valued.

Funding: this is a full-time, 4-year funded PhD position and includes a mobility allowance.

Deadline: 30 September 2026. To apply, send your CV and contact information for 3 references to Dr. Isabel Pérez-Otaño at [email protected].
