About this position

The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) invites applications for its competitive PhD Programme 2026, designed for talented students aiming to develop a research career in nanoscience and nanotechnology. ICN2 is recognized as one of Europe's leading institutions in this field, offering a stimulating environment with access to outstanding research infrastructure and a structured training path. The programme includes scientific seminars, technical and transferable skills training, and regular monitoring and evaluation activities to support students throughout their PhD journey.

Selected candidates will have the opportunity to develop their PhD thesis on cutting-edge topics in nanoresearch, working within cross-disciplinary research areas such as nanomaterials and nanofabrication, nanocharacterisation, and modelling and simulation. Application areas include health, energy, environment, and information, communication, and quantum technologies. ICN2 actively promotes international and interdisciplinary research, encouraging PhD students to undertake mobility actions such as research visits abroad, industrial placements, collaborations with national and international partners, and participation in conferences and workshops. This approach aims to maximize students' career prospects in academia and industry after completing their PhD.

During the application process, candidates will select the ICN2 research group(s) they wish to join. Detailed profiles of research groups and lines are available at ICN2 Research. The programme is structured according to the European Framework for Research Careers (First Stage Researcher, R1).

Requirements for applicants include a Master's or equivalent degree in a relevant scientific field by the date of incorporation, an excellent academic record, strong commitment to scientific research, and a high level of English. Previous research experience is highly regarded. Additional eligibility requirements may apply depending on the funding schemes available. Applicants must submit a cover letter, CV, two reference letters, and official academic records (with translation if not in English, Catalan, or Spanish). For clarifications, contact [email protected].

Funding is secured through competitive fellowships, with ICN2 providing full support for fellowship applications. Successful candidates will receive a full-time working contract as a PhD researcher, including medical care under the Spanish public healthcare system, workplace accident insurance, relocation support, life insurance, flexible timetable, and compensation package. The programme also offers comprehensive scientific, technical, and transferable skills training, as well as monitoring activities.

The application deadline is 5 August 2026, but applications are reviewed continuously and vacancies may be filled before the deadline. Candidates are advised not to wait until the last day to apply. The selection process is based on academic qualifications and research excellence, with committee evaluation and notification to candidates scheduled for September to November 2026.

ICN2 is committed to equal opportunities, fostering an inclusive and safe work environment free from discrimination. Recruitment is based solely on talent, experience, and ability, with proactive policies for inclusion and harassment prevention.
