About this position
The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) offers a competitive PhD Programme for talented students aiming to develop a research career in nanoscience and nanotechnology. ICN2 is recognized as one of the top European institutions in this field, providing a stimulating environment and access to outstanding research infrastructure. The programme is designed to support students throughout their PhD journey, offering structured training, scientific seminars, technical and transferable skills development, and regular monitoring and evaluation.
PhD candidates will engage in cross-disciplinary research areas such as nanomaterials and nanofabrication, nanocharacterisation, and modelling and simulation. Application areas include health, energy, environment, information, communication, and quantum technologies. Students are encouraged to undertake mobility actions, including research visits abroad, industrial placements, collaborations with national and international partners, and participation in conferences and workshops. This approach aims to maximize career prospects in both academia and industry after graduation.
Applicants must have a Master’s or equivalent degree in a relevant scientific field by the date of incorporation. An excellent academic record, strong commitment to scientific research, and a high level of English are required. Previous research experience is highly valued. Additional eligibility requirements may apply depending on the funding scheme, and candidates are encouraged to contact ICN2 for clarification.
Funding for the PhD is secured through competitive fellowships, with ICN2 providing full support for the application process. Successful candidates will receive a full-time working contract as a PhD researcher, including medical care under the Spanish public healthcare system, workplace accident insurance, relocation support, life insurance, flexible timetable, and compensation package. The programme also includes comprehensive training and monitoring activities.
To apply, candidates must submit their application via the ICN2 careers website, including a cover letter, CV, two reference letters, and official academic records (with translation if not in English, Catalan, or Spanish). Applicants should indicate three ICN2 research groups they wish to join. Confirmation of receipt will be sent by email. The selection process is based on academic qualifications and research excellence, with applications reviewed continuously. The deadline for applications is 5 August 2026, but early submission is encouraged as vacancies may be filled before the deadline.
