About this position
IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship Programme 2027–2028 is a fully funded nine-month residential fellowship hosted by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), Leiden University. The programme supports early- to mid-career researchers and knowledge professionals working on Asia from interdisciplinary, transregional, and global perspectives.
The fellowship is structured in two phases: a three-month residency at a partner institution in Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Europe, followed by a six-month residency at IIAS in Leiden, Netherlands. During the Leiden phase, fellows receive office space, seminar rooms, library access, workshops, and access to an international research community.
Research themes include Cities (and Environment), Politics of Culture, Asia in the World, Africa–Asia Axis of Knowledge, Humanities Across Borders, and Knowledge Diplomacy in Action. Projects that bridge academic and non-academic knowledge are especially encouraged.
Eligibility is divided into three categories: Academic (Funded), Academic (Self-Funded), and Independent Professional (Self-Funded). Academic applicants must hold a PhD or be defending by September 2026. Self-funded applicants must have external or personal funding secured; independent professionals should have relevant experience and confirmed funding.
Funding for the funded category includes a monthly stipend of €1,250 gross, a €1,200/month housing allowance during the Leiden residency, a travel grant, visa support, professional development activities, and full access to IIAS and Leiden University facilities.
