About this position

This PhD studentship at the University of Leeds offers an exciting opportunity to develop advanced AI solutions for image registration, anatomy segmentation, and immersive technology in surgical care. The project focuses on leveraging preoperative MRI and CT scans to create 3D models of organs, as well as utilizing intra-operative surgical videos to enhance surgical planning. The successful candidate will work on integrating new technologies, including VR and AR platforms, with support from the computer graphics team at Leeds. Research directions will be flexible and adapted in consultation with clinical colleagues and the supervisor, ensuring impactful and relevant outcomes.

Collaboration with computational scientists and surgeons is a key aspect of this studentship, providing a multidisciplinary environment to explore innovative approaches in medical imaging and surgical practice. The ideal applicant should have some prior knowledge in computer vision or deep learning, and a basic understanding of computer graphics, though these are not strict requirements. The project is situated within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, offering access to state-of-the-art facilities and expertise.

Funding is provided through a highly competitive School of Computer Science Studentship, covering full academic fees and a tax-free maintenance grant at the UKRI standard rate (£21,805 per year for 3.5 years). An overtime fee (£340) applies in the writing up year, but the scholarship maintenance allowance continues for up to 6 months in the final year. This ensures financial support throughout the duration of the research.
