About this position

This PhD position in Generative Modelling in Biomedical Imaging is offered at the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, within the Centre for Biomedical Image Analysis (CBIA). The CBIA provides a multidisciplinary research environment, combining computer science, biomedical imaging, and clinical collaboration. The project focuses on generative modelling with primary applications in biomedical imaging, specifically the synthesis of rare types of brain tumors from scarce CT/MRI data in both 2D and 3D.

Possible research directions include generative modelling and latent space understanding in biomedical imaging, as well as image synthesis of both healthy and tumor-affected human brains. The specific research topic will be determined in agreement with the supervisor, Associate Professor David Svoboda. The position is embedded in a four-year doctoral programme in Informatics, delivered in English or Czech, and expects students to conduct independent research, publish at international venues, and participate in conferences and research stays.

Funding is available for full-time students, including a basic doctoral scholarship (18,000 CZK/month), an employment contract (20% FTE, ~7,000 CZK net/month), and a publication-performance scholarship (up to 7,000 CZK/month). Tuition fees are waived, and active PhD students typically reach a net monthly income of approximately 32,000 CZK during the standard study period.

Applicants must hold an MSc in computer science, applied mathematics, or image processing, with a strong background in deep learning and machine learning. Programming skills in Python, PyTorch, or TensorFlow, and a solid mathematical foundation are required. Preferred qualifications include experience in biomedical imaging, a publication or open-source track record, and skills in C++, GPU, or HPC.

To apply, candidates should submit their application through the Masaryk University e-application system by November 30, 2026. For further information, contact Associate Professor David Svoboda at [email protected]. More details about the CBIA can be found at https://cbia.fi.muni.cz/ and the supervisor's academic profile at https://www.muni.cz/en/people/2824.
