About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, supervised by Dr Joseph Lifton, aims to develop intelligent scanning strategies to advance X-ray computed tomography (XCT) for the inspection of next-generation engineering components. XCT is a powerful, non-destructive technique for verifying manufacturing quality and ensuring component safety, especially in sectors such as aerospace, energy generation, and automotive engineering. As engineering components become more complex, conventional XCT scanning methods face significant challenges, particularly with large or freeform geometries.

The research will focus on overcoming the limitations of traditional circular trajectory XCT by exploring innovative approaches such as the use of robotic manipulators, AI-driven scan optimisation, and the development of digital twins. The project will involve both experimental and simulation work, with a strong emphasis on image processing. Candidates with programming skills in Python or Matlab will be well-suited for this research, though prior knowledge of X-ray imaging is not required and can be developed during the project.

Applicants must hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in engineering or physics. Desirable skills include experience with image processing in Python or Matlab. English language qualifications are required for non-native speakers.
