About this position
The University of Coimbra is opening an international tender for 2 PhD Researcher positions equivalent to the category of Assistant Researcher in Music Studies, with a specific focus on Music Theory and Analysis, hosted at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of the 20th Century (CEIS20) within the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research.
The project, MusicAnalytica – Interdisciplining Music Studies through the Reconfiguration of Theoretical and Analytical Knowledge, is funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement 101187606). The recruited researchers will work on the theory and analysis of musical time and its intersections with other disciplines, combining independent scholarship, collaborative research, and infrastructure-oriented dissemination activities.
Each researcher is expected to divide time across three strands: 40% independent scholarly projects, 40% collaborative work with the Coimbra consortium for the interdisciplinary study of musical time, and up to 20% with the ERA Chair Holder on designing and implementing projects that build infrastructure for the interdisciplinary dissemination of knowledge about musical temporality. The role also involves publishing, conference participation, and broader professional outreach, with periodic in-person meetings required.
The contract is temporary and full-time, with a gross monthly salary of 3,576.56 EUR. The maximum duration is three years, renewable for one-year periods up to six years. The post is based in Coimbra, Portugal.
Eligibility requires a PhD in the stated scientific area(s) or in a closely related field, provided the candidate can demonstrate strong capability to develop work in the main area of the competition. Applicants must also satisfy general public employment conditions, including being legally eligible for public-sector work, in good health, and meeting vaccination requirements. Candidates who are not native speakers of Portuguese or English must prove C1 proficiency in at least one of those languages.
Applications must be submitted through the Apply UC online platform and include a dated and signed CV covering the last five years (or an eligible extended assessment period), qualification certificates, 3 to 6 best papers, the remaining papers listed in the CV or their DOI/URN identifiers, and any other relevant material. Foreign doctoral degrees must be recognized or registered by contract signing. All required documents should be submitted by the deadline.
