About this position

Research Grant opportunity at the University of Aveiro, hosted by CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, in Portugal. The project is POLINA (ref. 101129842) and focuses on chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, and materials science/engineering.

The work plan centers on developing and validating biofabrication systems based on a new library of “clickable” and photoresponsive poly(amino acid)s and human cells. The selected researcher will explore bioprinting and 3D printing for 3D cellular and tissue models using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and other human cells, and will evaluate biomaterial compatibility and functionality in light-controlled 3D structures.

This is a Master-level research grant (not a PhD or postdoc opening). Eligible applicants include candidates with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or Materials Engineering, or those enrolled in relevant master/integrated master/doctoral/non-degree study paths as specified in the call. Strong preference is given to applicants with hands-on experience in biomaterials and cellular systems, especially iPSC culture and differentiation, 2D/3D cell culture, vascular models, bioprinting, biofabrication, and biomaterial functionalization.

The grant lasts 12 months starting in November 2026, with a monthly allowance of €1,359.64 and possible voluntary social security reimbursement. Applications are open from 18 September 2026 to 1 October 2026 and must be submitted by email with the required documents.

Scientific supervision is by Professor Doctor Vítor Manuel Abreu Gaspar at the University of Aveiro. The selection panel also includes Professor João Filipe Colardelle da Luz Mano and Dr. João Manuel Marques Rodrigues, with additional substitute members listed in the call.

What's required

Applicants must have a Master’s degree or be enrolled in a master’s, integrated master’s, doctoral, or non-degree course within the University of Aveiro’s educational project. Experience in production, characterization, and handling of biomaterials and cellular systems is required, with particular value given to experience in culturing, maintaining, handling, and differentiating induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and using iPSC-derived cellular models. Experience in 2D and 3D cell culture, vascular models, bioprinting, biofabrication, 3D printing, and chemical functionalization/modification of biomaterials is also valued.
