About this position
The University of Virginia’s Center for Cultural Landscapes in the School of Architecture is inviting applications for a one-year Mellon Postdoctoral Research Associate position linked to the Outsider Preservation Initiative (OPI). This interdisciplinary project focuses on descendant-centered preservation, historic Black settlements, community-engaged research, public humanities, and the relationships among technology, public history, planning, and preservation in historically marginalized communities.
The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with the Center Director, faculty, students, descendant communities, and external partners. Core responsibilities include qualitative and mixed-methods research, data collection and organization, data analysis, visualization, GIS mapping, digital research infrastructure development, web portal development, scholarly publishing, grant writing support, and public-facing outputs. The role also supports teaching in urban and environmental planning and participation in Center programming, workshops, lectures, and public engagement activities.
Eligibility: applicants should hold a doctoral degree in planning, historic preservation, history, geography, anthropology, African American studies, public humanities, cultural heritage studies, digital humanities, data science, or a related field. Preferred experience includes qualitative methods, database development, digital humanities, GIS/spatial analysis, computational or social data methods, NVivo, ArcGIS/QGIS, Python/R, web-based research platforms, web/graphic design, and program evaluation.
