About this position

Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Smith Lab is recruiting one graduate student for an M.S. or Ph.D. position in avian ecology, wildlife ecology, telemetry, and resource selection. The project focuses on the space use of White-winged Doves in South Texas during the non-breeding season, with an emphasis on movement ecology across multiple spatial scales.

The student will work with an existing GPS-GSM telemetry dataset, collect new field data, and analyze hunter-harvested birds to support ecological inference and management applications. The research is designed to inform strategies that support recreational hunting while improving understanding of an understudied seasonal period for White-winged Doves.

Location: Kingsville, Texas / South Texas, United States.

Funding: M.S. stipend of $2,000/month or Ph.D. stipend of $2,500/month, plus benefits and a full tuition waiver.

Eligibility highlights: M.S. applicants should have a B.S. in ecology, wildlife biology, natural resources, or a related field, a GPA of 3.0+, and experience with R and GIS. Ph.D. applicants should have an M.S. in a related field, GPA 3.0+, strong quantitative skills, and experience with R and ArcPro. Strong communication skills, research experience, and the ability to work in hot, humid field conditions are required; bird trapping/banding, telemetry experience, and publications or conference presentations are preferred.

Application: Send a single PDF with a one-page letter of interest, CV/resume, unofficial transcripts, and two references to Jennifer Smith at [email protected]. Review begins on 2026-10-31 and continues until a suitable candidate is selected.
