About this position

PhD opportunity in artificial intelligence, IoT, and distributed computing at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Bergen, Norway.

This MSCA Doctoral Network PhD position is part of TUAI - Towards an Understanding of Artificial Intelligence via a transparent, open and explainable perspective. The project focuses on how AI can be integrated into distributed, dynamic, heterogeneous systems that combine sensor networks, IoT devices, mobile platforms, and low-power communication technologies such as BTLE and UWB. A central goal is to develop transparent, open, and explainable approaches for AI-enabled smart services, with attention to sustainability, energy efficiency, trust, and performance.

The successful candidate will work on a platform that integrates AI-based techniques into heterogeneous computing paradigms, avoiding centralized servers and supporting deployment across multiple hardware platforms. The research will explore challenges such as off-loading classification from resource-constrained devices to nearby more powerful nodes, updating distributed AI classifiers, and establishing trust and resilience through consensus in device neighbourhoods. The candidate will also evaluate the platform in realistic settings, including automated guided vehicles at a partner institution.

In addition to the core platform work, the PhD will investigate methods and tools to quantify key software and system properties such as privacy, reliability, and energy consumption. The position is therefore well suited to students interested in AI systems, embedded and mobile computing, distributed algorithms, and trustworthy intelligent systems.

Eligibility and requirements: applicants need a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related field, or be in the final stage of completing it. Strong object-oriented programming skills are required, and experience with mobile or embedded systems is an advantage. Applicants should be interested in IoT, smart and self-adaptive systems, and must have good written and oral English.

Funding and timing: the position is funded by Horizon Europe / MSCA under Marie Curie Grant Agreement 101168344. The position starts on 1 January 2027 and runs as a full-time temporary PhD appointment. The application deadline is 11 October 2026.

Institution: Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Bergen, Norway.

What's required

A master's degree in computer science or a closely related field is required; candidates in the final stage of completing the degree may also qualify if they submit a draft thesis and transcript of completed coursework. Applicants should have a solid grasp of object-oriented programming (e.g. C++, Java, Kotlin, Swift) and programming experience on mobile platforms or embedded systems is an advantage. Interest in IoT, smart and self-adaptive systems and their applications is expected. Applicants must be proficient in written and oral English, and the selection process also values strong course grades, an excellent master's thesis (equivalent to grade B or better on the ECTS scale), publications if any, research and teaching experience, practical software engineering skills, and a possible outline of a PhD research plan.
