About this position

This MSCA Doctoral Researcher position at Tampere University focuses on sensor-based localization and mapping for mobile work machines operating in dynamic forest environments. The project is part of the ENGAGE network, which brings together leading machine manufacturers and academic groups across Europe to advance green, autonomous, and digital solutions for mobile machinery. The doctoral researcher will work on developing methods and algorithms for creating and updating digital maps in forest environments, designing SLAM algorithms that integrate various sensor modalities, and optimizing these algorithms for low computational resources suitable for edge computing. Scientific objectives include developing trust-aware positioning methods, sensor-agnostic localization and SLAM algorithms robust to environmental changes, rapid map updates based on reliability, and introspective analysis to identify mapping and localization risks.

The position offers comprehensive training in state-of-the-art sensor-based localization, SLAM, and computational efficiency, with opportunities for dissemination through social media and network promotion. The doctoral candidate will spend 12 months at Tampere University and 24 months at Ponsse, a leading company in mobile machine automation systems. The position is full-time for three years, with an expected start date of January 1, 2026, and includes a six-month trial period. The gross salary is approximately 3800 EUR/month, with additional family allowance if applicable, and is defined according to MSCA funding rules.

Applicants must hold an MSc in a relevant engineering discipline or applied mathematics, be eligible for doctoral studies at Tampere University, and comply with the MSCA Mobility Rule. Proficiency in English is required, and experience in computer vision, SLAM, map-based localization, sensor-based positioning, and deep learning is valued. The application process requires submission of degree certificates, CV, motivation letter, and proof of residence via the LAURA portal by November 16, 2025. Early applications are encouraged as interviews may begin during the application period.

The project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the future of smart, sustainable mobile machinery in a vibrant academic and industrial environment in Finland.
