About this position

Graduate opportunities are available in the Lab of Conservation Ecology at Northern Arizona University for students interested in applied plant ecology, restoration ecology, rangeland management, biodiversity, and ecological resilience.

Drs. Clare Aslan and Sara Souther are recruiting three graduate students to start in Fall 2027. The openings include one MS or PhD project on culturally informed restoration of Madrean oak woodlands and two MS projects focused on sustainable rangeland management on the Colorado Plateau and biodiversity/resilience in the southeastern Arizona borderlands.

The first project is funded by an Emory Oak Collaborative Tribal Restoration Initiative (EOCTRI) Fellowship and may support either a 2-year MS or a 4-year PhD. It involves Emory oak demography, treatment monitoring, restoration effectiveness, Indigenous land stewardship, drought, and fire. The second and third projects are funded by 2-year Olajos-Goslow MS Fellowships and focus on grazing impacts, disturbance resilience, endangered and culturally important plants, fuels-treatment effectiveness, and biodiversity across disturbance gradients.

Ideal candidates should have fieldwork experience, an interest in applied ecology, a commitment to working with diverse communities and partners, strong data-analysis potential, independence, and strong writing skills. A bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of experience are listed in the posting.

To apply, email a CV, writing sample, and a brief statement of interest by November 1, 2026. Send materials to [email protected] for project #1 and [email protected] for projects #2 and #3. Strong candidates will be interviewed in November and then invited to submit formal applications to the School of Earth and Sustainability by January 1.

Location: Flagstaff, Arizona, United States.
