About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton focuses on the design and fabrication of topological photonic crystals on silicon chips, targeting advanced applications in optical imaging, sensing, and computing. Topological photonics leverages topological theory to develop novel optical materials that support robust light propagation, even in the presence of defects, making them ideal for on-chip photonic systems. The research will combine theoretical calculations with experimental investigations, including cleanroom training and hands-on engagement with fabrication processes.

Supervised by Dr Dong-Yang Wang, the project is based within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the School of Optoelectronics (ORC), which is recognized for its commitment to equality, diversity, and sustainability. Applicants should have a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in physics or optoelectronics, with a strong background and research interest in photonics, physics, and mathematics. Funding is available for both UK and international students. Horizon Europe fee waivers automatically cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students. Competition-based Presidential Bursaries and studentships may cover tuition fees and provide a stipend for living costs for top-ranked applicants. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is recommended.
