This three-year PhD studentship at the University of Plymouth focuses on the pharmacogenomic repurposing of drugs for treatment-resistant B-cell lymphoma, specifically diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), one of the most common and aggressive haematological malignancies. Despite the effectiveness of standard R-CHOP therapy, approximately 40% of patients are refractory or relapse, highlighting the urgent need for novel adjunct therapies.
The project employs a hybrid approach combining wet lab and dry lab techniques. High-throughput screening of B lymphoma cell lines with FDA-approved drugs, alongside data mining from repositories such as GDSC, CellMiner, CTRP, DepMap/PRISM, and PharmacoDB, is used to identify and validate candidate drugs. These drugs are tested as single agents and in synergy assays with R-CHOP components. Informatic methods include manipulation of large pharmacogenomic datasets using R scripting, Python, and machine learning to quantify drug responses and identify specific activity against B-cell lymphoma.
Laboratory techniques include high-throughput cell-based screening, flow cytometry, and preclinical treatment models. The project is based in the Derriford Research Facility, offering access to advanced research infrastructure including confocal microscopy, histology, and experimental animal facilities. The research environment supports interdisciplinary work across cancer, infection, immunity, and neurodegeneration.
Supervision is provided by Dr Anthony Uren (Director of Studies), Dr Lynn McCallum, and Dr Vikram Sharma. The successful candidate will participate in both laboratory and informatic research, with emphasis tailored to their prior experience.
Eligibility requires a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or a Masters qualification. The studentship covers full Home tuition fees, a stipend of £19,215 per annum (2025/26 rate), and £2,500 per annum bench fees for three years. International applicants must cover the difference between Home and International tuition fees. No funding is available for NHS Immigration Health Surcharge, visa costs, or flights. The fourth year is self-funded for writing-up.
