About this position

This PhD position at AMOLF focuses on the AI-assisted discovery of chiral perovskites in nanophotonic environments, leveraging advanced materials optimization robots and high-throughput optical experimentation. The project aims to rapidly synthesize and characterize perovskite quantum emitters, optimizing for properties such as chirality, emission wavelength, brightness, and stability. By utilizing a spatial light modulator and hyperspectral camera, the research will explore vast chemical and processing landscapes, with special attention to 2D and low-dimensional perovskites. The goal is to understand the role of material chirality in programmable optical functions and to introduce a new paradigm in optoelectronic device design by screening perovskite emitters directly on substrates with structured optical responses.

Collaborating with the University of Amsterdam, the successful candidate will be based in the Nanoscale Solar Cells group led by Dr. Erik Garnett at AMOLF, and will also work with Professors Sander Mann and Jorik van de Groep at the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute. The project provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the AMOLF nanolab, ultrafast and chiral microscopes, and advanced simulation tools. The position is a full-time appointment (40 hours/week) for four years, with a starting salary of 3,115 Euros gross per month and a range of employment benefits. Upon successful completion, a PhD degree will be granted at a Dutch university. Several courses tailored for PhD students are available, and the institute fosters a supportive and dynamic work culture with regular social activities.

Analytical thinking, creativity, independence, teamwork, and excellent English communication skills are essential.
