About this position
ETH Zurich’s Neurotechnology Group of Prof. Mehmet Fatih Yanik is recruiting PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for a newly funded LOOP Zurich Flagship Project on focused ultrasound-mediated brain drug delivery.
The project aims to advance a precision therapeutic platform that combines drug carrier formulation, chemical engineering, ultrasound-responsive nanoparticles/microbubbles/liposomes, medical imaging, and closed-loop control to deliver therapeutics to specific brain regions without invasive surgery. The work is highly interdisciplinary and sits at the interface of chemical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, biomedical engineering, and translational medicine.
Research tasks may include design and synthesis of ultrasound-responsive carriers, optimization of drug loading and encapsulation efficiency, characterization of size/zeta potential/stability/morphology, microfluidic or other production methods, assessment of release kinetics, in vitro and in vivo testing, analytical quantification (e.g., HPLC, DLS), and integration with focused ultrasound systems. The project also involves collaboration with clinicians and preparation for first-in-human clinical studies.
Eligibility: PhD applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree and preferably a Master’s degree. Postdoctoral applicants should hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences/Pharmaceutics, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong quantitative skills, programming ability (Python/MATLAB or similar), laboratory experience in formulation or colloid chemistry, and experience with carrier characterization are preferred. Applicants should be motivated by translational drug delivery research and willing to participate in animal experiments.
Location: ETH Zurich, Switzerland. The project is conducted in close collaboration with the University of Zurich, University Hospital Zurich, and the Swiss Epilepsy Clinic Lengg.
Application: Apply online only via the ETH Zurich portal. Prepare a single PDF with a cover letter, CV, transcripts, degree certificates, publications if applicable, and contact details for at least two academic referees. Questions can be sent to [email protected].
