About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in AI-driven smart material characterisation and modelling in the Department of Structural Engineering, based in Trondheim, Norway.

This PhD is part of the AIMOS project (Artificial Intelligence for Multiscale Offshore Structures) and sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, materials science, mechanical/structural engineering, and offshore engineering. The project focuses on experimental characterisation and computational modelling of smart materials for adaptive offshore structures, with emphasis on predicting mechanical behaviour, stiffness variation, response times, durability, and developing efficient models for structural simulation.

The successful candidate will combine experimental investigations, physics-informed modelling, and machine learning to build predictive material models and assess smart-material-based actuation in offshore structures. The role includes coursework (minimum 30 ECTS), research, publications, dissemination, and collaboration with other PhD candidates in AIMOS, including work related to fluid-structure interaction and agentic AI. Participation in the SIMLab research group is also expected.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, computer science, or equivalent; strong academic results (B or better on NTNU’s scale); admission eligibility for the doctoral programme in Engineering; and very good English. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must submit an approved language test (TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, or CPE) meeting the stated minimum scores. Preferred experience includes finite-element analysis, computational plasticity, Python programming, AI/data-driven methods, and experimental work or data analysis.

Funding and terms: this is a paid PhD employment at NTNU, normally with a gross salary of NOK 580,000 per year depending on qualifications and seniority. The appointment period is 3 years, and project working capital is available.

How to apply: submit the application electronically via Jobbnorge.no before 20 November 2026. Required attachments include transcripts and diplomas, CV, Master’s thesis (or draft if recently submitted), a project outline, a short motivation letter, relevant publications/research work, and contact details for three referees. If your education was taken abroad, include documentation of scope and quality plus any diploma supplement or HK-dir statement if available.
