About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a full-time PhD Candidate in Children’s Media in English within the Department of Teacher Education in Trondheim, Norway.
The position is linked to the project “Global Childhoods on Screen: Children’s Film, English Learning, and Critical Media Literacy” and the research group CLEAR: Children’s Literature in Education and Research. The project sits at the intersection of children’s media studies, children’s literature, critical media literacy, English education, film studies, and pedagogy, with a focus on how children’s and family films shape language, culture, childhood, and English learning.
The successful candidate will develop and carry out an individual PhD project on selected children’s and family films and their pedagogical use in English teaching. Possible methods include multimodal textual analysis, qualitative educational research, teacher interviews, creative methods, arts-based methods, and classroom-oriented inquiry. The project proposal must be at least two pages and clearly connected to the advertised theme and CLEAR’s ongoing work.
This is a 4-year appointment with 25% teaching and other career-promoting work. Teaching duties may include teaching, supervision, assessment, and course development in English and English education at bachelor’s and master’s levels. The position is based at NTNU in Trondheim and includes active participation in CLEAR seminars, conferences, and collaborative research activities, including work with the TransLit research group.
Eligibility highlights: completed MA degree in English, English education, children’s literature, media studies, film studies, pedagogy, or a closely related field; applicants completing an MA in 2026 may apply if completion is documented by 1 January 2027; strong academic background with B or better average (or equivalent); admission requirements for NTNU’s doctoral programme; excellent written and oral English.
Funding: gross salary normally NOK 550,800 per year depending on qualifications and seniority, with statutory pension contribution deducted. The post is a salaried PhD employment, not a scholarship.
