About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Control Systems for Nuclear Reactors on Ships at the Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering in Ålesund, Norway.

The project is part of SAINT (Sustainable, Applied and Industrialized Nuclear Technology), an interdisciplinary initiative focused on maritime nuclear propulsion and the control of shipboard nuclear reactors. The research will center on control systems, nuclear reactor control, dynamic systems, simulation, and the interface between reactor output and ship power demand. The work will be carried out on a reactor simulator, with possible validation on a physical non-nuclear test system.

The position is embedded in a broader collaboration across nuclear engineering, naval architecture, electrical power systems, and maritime operations, with close links to industry partners such as shipbuilders, reactor vendors, turbine manufacturers, control system developers, classification societies, and maritime operators. The project aims to support the development of demonstration ships in the early 2030s.

Eligibility highlights: applicants need a relevant Master's degree in physics, control engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field; strong academic performance; admission eligibility for NTNU's Doctoral Programme in Engineering; and high proficiency in English. Master students may apply if the degree will be completed before start.

Funding: this is a salaried PhD employment at NTNU, normally NOK 580,000 per year gross, for a 3-year period.

Application deadline: 4 October 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no with transcripts, diplomas, CV, thesis, project outline, motivation letter, and referee contacts.
