NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Electricity Market Coupling and Market Design Transformation in the Department of Electric Energy, hosted by the Electricity Markets and Energy System Planning (EMESP) research group.

It focuses on flow-based market coupling, market clearing, capacity allocation, interconnectors, zonal pricing, congestion management, welfare distribution, and the relationship between market outcomes and physical power-system constraints in Nordic and European electricity markets.

The successful candidate will develop optimization-based market models and scenario studies to analyze how future market designs can support efficient and secure low-carbon power systems. The post emphasizes quantitative research, scientific programming (preferably Python, Julia, or R), and familiarity with electricity market fundamentals and operational research.

This is a full-time PhD position for 3 years, with a possible extension of 3 to 12 months for career-enhancing activities. The position is conditional on funding. Salary is normally NOK 550,800 per year before deductions, depending on qualifications and seniority.

Eligibility highlights include a relevant master's degree in electrical power engineering or economic analysis with strong quantitative skills and specialization in operational research, a strong academic record, and English proficiency at B2 level (C1 preferred). Preferred experience includes electricity markets, EU-NO regulatory frameworks, data analysis, and Scandinavian language skills.
