NTNU is advertising a PhD Candidate position in Incorporating distribution grids in multiscale stochastic energy system models within FME SecurEL, a Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research focused on secure, resilient, and sustainable electricity distribution grids. The position is based at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway.
The project sits at the intersection of energy systems, power system modeling, stochastic optimization, and operations research. The research will develop new methods and modeling frameworks to include distribution grids and distributed resources in multiscale energy system models, with attention to security of supply. The models may span multiple time scales (investment, operations, balancing) and geographical scales, and will use stochastic formulations to capture demand and renewable generation variability. This is a 3-year temporary PhD position. The successful candidate will be employed by NTNU and participate in the broader SecurEL research environment together with partners such as SINTEF and IFE. Salary is stated as NOK 536,200 gross per year before tax, with standard pension deductions, and working capital is available for project implementation.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a master’s degree or equivalent in operations research and optimization or a closely related field, with a strong academic record (B or better on NTNU’s scale). Excellent English speaking and writing skills are required. Preferred experience includes stochastic optimization, energy system analysis, Scandinavian language skills, and programming/tools such as Julia and Python.
