About this position

NTNU’s Department of Psychology in Trondheim, Norway is advertising a PhD Candidate in Environmental Psychology within an interdisciplinary project linking environmental psychology and artificial intelligence. The project focuses on reducing the environmental footprint of households by developing and testing AI-supported interventions for energy saving.

The PhD will build on prior work from the research group Citizens, Environment and Safety and the EU project ENCHANT, where electricity-use data from European households were used to design psychologically informed interventions. The new project aims to use generative AI to tailor intervention messages and visuals dynamically to user preferences, integrate these solutions with smart steering and measurements, and evaluate their appeal and effectiveness in pilot households.

The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team with psychology and AI experts, contribute to training the tailoring engine, define safe and scientifically grounded boundaries for the system, and later test the prototype in households using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The role includes doctoral training, academic publications, dissemination, and participation in international activities such as conferences and research stays.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master’s degree in Psychology or equivalent; strong academic results (normally B or better); admission eligibility for NTNU’s PhD programme in Social Science; solid qualitative and quantitative research skills; good English; and the ability to collaborate with computer science and cybernetics. Preferred experience includes environmental psychology, behaviour change theory, intervention design, generative AI, fieldwork, interdisciplinary teamwork, and Scandinavian language skills.

Funding and terms: the position is a 3-year PhD appointment with a gross salary normally NOK 550,800 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. NTNU also mentions working capital for the project, employee benefits, pension terms, and free basic Norwegian language training.

Application deadline: 31 August 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no with transcripts and diplomas, CV, master’s thesis or draft, project outline (max 1500 words/4 pages), motivation letter, publications/relevant work, certificates, and three referees.
