About this position

University of Oslo is advertising a PhD Research Fellow in Meteorology at the Department of Geoscience, Section for Meteorology and Oceanography, in Oslo, Norway.

The project, EEIwarm, is funded by the Research Council of Norway and focuses on the recent acceleration in global warming, especially the 2023–2025 warming surge. The PhD researcher will study Earth’s energy imbalance (EEI), ocean heat content (OHC), cloud and radiative flux variations, and the physical drivers of rapid warming using the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM3) and satellite data from CERES.

Research tasks include analyzing observational datasets, running atmosphere-only NorESM3 simulations, and diagnosing coupled and atmosphere-only simulations to connect cloud processes and EEI anomalies to the warming surge.

Required background includes a Master’s degree or equivalent in Meteorology or a related field, strong programming skills, experience with large datasets, and ideally experience analyzing or running weather/climate models. Fluent English is required, and Scandinavian language skills are desirable. Applicants from outside the EU/EEA should check the English language rules and exemptions.

The fellowship lasts three years, with a possible fourth year including 25% career-promoting work such as teaching or supervision. Salary is NOK 550,800–595,000 depending on competence and experience.

Apply via Jobbnorge by the deadline on 2026-09-15. Submit a cover letter, CV, degree diplomas and transcripts, English documentation if needed, publication list, and 2–3 references. Foreign applicants should also include an official explanation of their grading system.
