About this position

PhD opportunity at Aalto University in AI, quantum-inspired optimization, and sustainable energy systems.

The position is for a Doctoral Researcher in the Multi-energy System Planning and Operation Research Group at the School of Electrical Engineering, working with Assistant Professor Zhengmao Li. The research sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, quantum-inspired optimization, energy-system modelling, and decision-making for complex energy systems.

Research themes include renewable energy integration, multi-energy networks, flexibility management, resilient energy infrastructure, green hydrogen, smart grids, ship and port energy systems, and energy-intensive infrastructures such as data centres. The role involves developing mathematical, data-driven, and AI-based models; designing optimization and scheduling methods; exploring quantum-inspired methods; and implementing algorithms in Python, MATLAB, Julia, or similar tools.

This is a fully funded doctoral position supported by the Research Council of Finland as part of the SiGMA project. The post is based in Espoo, Finland, and offers a collaborative, international research environment with opportunities for publications, conferences, teaching, and international collaboration.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, automation, or a related field; strong background in optimization, machine learning, reinforcement learning, or data-driven decision-making; good English; and strong motivation for research.

Deadline: 30 August 2026. Apply via Aalto’s recruitment site with a CV and motivation letter.
