About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in International Business at the School of International Business in Ålesund, Norway. The project sits at the intersection of international business, international management, leadership, cross-cultural management, and technology-driven organizational change.

The research topic examines how digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, and remote operations reshape work organization, authority, trust, role clarity, and coordination. A particular emphasis is placed on how leadership and culture jointly influence responses to distributed, technology-mediated work, especially in culturally diverse teams. The project may use remote maritime operations as an empirical context, making it especially relevant for students interested in marine and maritime industries, organizational behavior, and leadership in complex environments.

The successful candidate will develop a research proposal within the project scope and will have room to shape the theoretical framework, research questions, and methodology. The position includes doctoral research, academic publications, dissemination, participation in the research group on international business and innovation, and opportunities for conferences and research stays abroad.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant master's degree in international business, international management, business administration, or a closely related business/management field; strong academic results; and good oral and written English and/or Norwegian. Applicants must also satisfy NTNU doctoral admission requirements. Master’s students may apply if the degree will be completed before starting.

Funding and conditions: this is a salaried PhD employment at NTNU, normally NOK 580,000 per year gross, for a 3-year period. The post includes employee benefits and access to a supportive international academic environment.

Application deadline: 25 October 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no with transcripts, diplomas, CV, thesis, project outline, motivation letter, and referee details.
